Renault has teased its first Geely-based model, which will be produced in South Korea and use hybrid powertrains.

The French automaker has published a shadowy image of a rakish coupe crossover ahead of its 2024 introduction.

It says it’ll launch an all-new line-up of hybrid models in the D-segment “based on the latest Geely-Volvo technologies for both local and export markets starting 2024”.

Chinese carmaker Geely has a controlling interest in Volvo, its EV spinoff Polestar, LEVC (producer of London’s iconic black taxi cabs), Lotus, and Proton.

It acquired a third of Renault Korea Motors earlier this year and, though the latter will use underpinnings supplied by the former, the Franco-Korean division intends to invest more than €900 million (A$1.39bn) over the next six years.

While gas prices have largely fallen across the country, Californians are still paying an average of $6.28 per gallon as of this writing. Politicians in the state have noted the discrepancy and laid the blame squarely on oil companies. Now, gas refiner and marketer Valero Energy Corp. has responded directly and called the state’s policies out in return.

California Governor Gavin Newsom posted a video on Twitter back on September 30th where he called out gas companies. “Oil companies are ripping you off. Their record profits are coming at your expense at the pump,” the Tweet said. He then called for a new tax on oil companies and promised to return the cash to Californians.

A recent CNN report has drawn attention to a federal advisory board’s recommendation that the government encourage automakers to build cars that can’t speed. It’s true. But it’s also nothing new and, forgive us, not likely to go anywhere fast.

What Started This

This week, CNN aired a report suggesting that federal regulators want to encourage (but not mandate) automakers to build speed limiters into all new cars.

The City of New York recently purchased 50 new vehicles equipped with intelligent speed assistance technology. A system uses GPS technology to track where the cars are and limits acceleration so that they can’t exceed the speed limit for that area. A button on the dashboard lets city workers override it if they need to speed up to merge.

Proton Iriz EV 2

Proton has announced it will offer its own-brand, homegrown electric vehicle (EV) for Malaysia, although no definitive timeline has been laid out for now.

This was revealed during today’s exchange of memorandum of understanding (MOU) documents between the carmaker’s NEV subsidiary, Proton New Energy Technology (Pro-Net) and Gentari at the ongoing 2022 International Greentech and Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM).

If you’re unfamiliar with the term ‘NEV’, it stands for new energy vehicle and is popularly used in China for electrified vehicles, which includes those with either a mild hybrid, hybrid, plug-in hybrid or fully electric powertrain – the last of which is also commonly referred to as an EV (electric vehicle) or BEV (battery electric vehicle).

Polestar has just revealed their new 3 electric luxury SUV, and along with the debut of the vehicle itself, the configurator for it has already gone live to allow potential buyers to spec it to their heart’s content.

The Polestar 3 is now the largest vehicle in the Swedish automaker’s lineup, and it will share a platform with the Volvo XC90‘s effective replacement called EV90 . To get a sense of its size, the 3’s 117.5-in (2,985 mm) wheelbase falls just under an inch above the Tesla Model X’s, but a few inches shorter than the three-row Rivian R1S’s. Pricing for the Polestar 3 starts at $83,900, which puts it in line with other luxury SUVs in its class, electric or otherwise.
