What strikes you immediately about Hyundai’s RN22e ‘rolling lab’ concept is its sheer size more than anything else.

Stretching almost 5.0 metres long and nearly 2.0 metres wide, this ground-hugging, full-tilt EV is a high-performance, monster-size version of the brand’s upcoming Ioniq 6 all-electric sedan.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen this prototype in action, either. Earlier this year at Hyundai’s Namyang proving facility in South Korea we saw it testing, while only a couple months ago CarExpert’s Paul Maric also drove it in Germany (video below) after a relatively deep dive into the technology.

Nevertheless, this is the first Aussie drive, and what better circuit than The Bend in South Australia (West Circuit) to put the RN22e through its paces, but over just four laps.

The bonus was that N-guru and chief architect of N sub-brand, Albert Biermann, along with Till Wartenberg; Vice President N Brand and Motorsport,

The works ministry (KKR) has announced that the Jalan Batang Kali-Genting Highlands route will be closed to facilitate slope and road repair works, which are expected to take one year before it is reopened to the public. Last Friday, a deadly landslide hit a campsite at Father’s Organic Farm in Batang Kali near Genting Highlands, with 24 deaths reported as of Saturday (December 17).

Datuk Wan Ahmad Uzir Wan Sulaiman, who is the KKR secretary-general, advised motorists to use alternative routes suggested by the public works department (JKR) during the period, reports Berita Harian.

He added that the ministry would conduct an in-depth study at the site of the tragedy regarding the construction of the slope after search and rescue operations are over. “Although the road is OK, we dare not open it until a new slope is made which will take about a year,” said Wan Ahmad Uzir.

One of the biggest headwinds for electric vehicle (EV) uptake has been the charging experience. EV models on the market today require a plug-in charger for use either at home or a public station. The idea of going wireless with induction charging has been floated for years, promising benefits such as a reduction in battery size and cost, extended driving range, reduced pressure on the grid, and the ability to charge multiple EVs simultaneously. While a number of big-name companies are working on the technology and running pilots, traction has been slow. That’s starting to change.

“In five years, wireless EV charging will be the dominant form of charging infrastructure globally,” predicts Oren Ezer, Co-Founder and Chief Executive of wireless charging specialist Electreon. “Wires and cables will never appear on the busy streets of mega cities like Paris or along New York’s 5th Avenue. Inevitably, EV charging will become less

Ford Australia published footage from the comprehensive durability testing program of the right-hand-drive F-150 that will become available Down Under starting in 2023.

The full-size pickup which has been converted to right-hand-drive by Melbourne-based RMA, went through the same tests as the locally-developed Ranger and Everest, making sure it can withstand the harshest conditions. The truck was exposed to extreme temperatures ranging between -40° and +50° Celsius (-40° and 105° Fahrenheit), going through several water crossing, mud, sand, and corrosion tests. It also towed a 4.5-tonne (9,921 pounds) trailer with a boat on a high-speed oval track which is the limit of its towing capabilities.

Gold 2023 Kia Seltos parked near office buildingsThe 2023 Kia Seltos has won the Kelley Blue Book Best Buy Award in the subcompact SUV class.

Subcompact SUV buyers are often price-sensitive and not exactly the most frugal shoppers. Subcompact SUVs are generally more expensive than the subcompact cars that compete for the title of the cheapest new car. Still, Subcompact SUVs appeal to buyers who need more capability and space than they’d get with a sedan or hatchback but don’t want to pay much more.

That puts a challenge to automakers — they must build a well-equipped and attractive vehicle while keeping the price low.

A Lot of SUV for a Little Money

The Seltos clears that bar comfortably. A starting price of just $23,140 (plus a mandatory $1,295 destination charge) keeps it within reach for many buyers while offering a long list of standard features. A safety package including lane-keeping assist, lane-following assist, auto emergency braking,

As reported last week, another Chinese brand is preparing to hit the Australian market in 2023, with dual-cab utes on the launch menu – both diesel and (shortly after) electric.

The company is called JAC Motors (full name Anhui Jianghuai Automobile Group Co., Ltd), and is State-owned, based in Hefei, and trades on the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

Little-known here, it sold more than 500,000 vehicles last year and claims to have exported more than 700,000 cars to 130 countries and regions in its history.

As well as making EVs, cars, utes, vans, trucks and buses, it’s also a tier one supplier of chassis, drivetrains and axles. Moreover, the company claims that among its 5000-strong R&D team are a subset dedicated to vehicles for western markets.

JAC also operates a Chinese joint-venture with Volkswagen, and is contracted to produce premium electric vehicles for fast-growing startup Nio through another joint venture announced

PLUS announced on its social media channels today that it is experiencing issues with the RFID payment system at various toll plazas on the PLUS highway.

Works to fix the issue are already underway but if you have yet to enter a PLUS highway using the RFID payment method it might be a good idea to use a backup Touch n Go/SmartTAG instead so you don’t get stuck when trying to exit the highway.

If you have already entered the highway using RFID, you must exit using RFID to avoid getting a penalty charge. PLUS says it has stationed personnel at affected RFID lanes to help motorists out.

A quick check on social media reveals highway users experiencing issues as early as before 7pm at various toll plazas such as Juru, Labu, Duta and Sungai Buloh.
