About 27,200 students enrolled in German universities as of 2018/19 winter semester have received a scholarship, according to the latest statistics provided by the national statistics agency in Germany.
Universities in Germany are a place of countless opportunities. In addition to charging only small administrative fees, German universities offer significant financial support to their gifted students in the form of many merit-based scholarships.
Official records from Destatis, the institution in charge of collecting statistics in Germany, has shown that during the last winter semester a number of around 27,200 students were granted a scholarship. Thus, it meant that scholarship grants in Germany during the Winter Semester 2018/19 increased by 5% compared to the previous winter semester. Said otherwise, students who were granted a scholarship equalled to 1% of the entire student population in Germany during that semester.
The annual statistical report also provided insights of scholarship grants by separate German states. Of the total students attending university in Saarland, a proportion of 1.6% of them was granted a scholarship during the 2018/19 Winter semester more than in any other German state.
On the other end, universities in Hamburg had the lowest ratio of scholarship grants versus the total number of students. As shown in the statistics, only 0.5% of students in Hamburg received a scholarship during the 2018/19 winter semester.
Engineering students were the largest group of recipients. A total of 10,556 Engineering students was granted a scholarship followed by law, economics and social sciences who accounted for 7,952 scholarship grants. At the bottom of the list stood students of Sports subjects who only received 111 scholarships.
Deutschsipendium is a national scholarship program which aims to provide excellent students with much-needed financial support. Every student in Germany who is eligible for this funding program gets €300 per semester, which is provided half by the Government and half is collected from private donors.
Despite that statistics show that funds collected from private donors have increased by 4% to €28 millions during 2018 in recent years the national funding program in Germany has been criticized that it failed to meet its criteria of subsidizing eight percent of the student population.
